The European Litter Prevention Association

Participation of the Network on the 6th National Urban Cleanliness Conference, Madeira, Portugal

Clean Europe Network, represented by Secretariat member Christos Tzagkas, participated in the 6th National Urban Cleanliness Conference, organised by our Portuguese member Associação Limpeza Urbana, in Madeira (Portugal) from 25 to 27 September 2024. The key theme focused on the three pillars of sustainability “+ Environment, + Economy, + People” and the conference touched upon key aspects of the circular economy such as the way to achieve European waste targets and the efficient use of resources to maintain clean cities.

More than 200 participants attended the 3-day conference, representing local authorities, companies and experts involved in the waste management sector. On Thursday 26 September, Christos Tzagkas presented the Network and the role of communities in preventing litter through the prism of the Clean Europe Strategy. Case studies of Network members were used to showcase the importance of engaging communities in achieving litter prevention.

The presentation was well received by various stakeholders, such as local authorities and circular economy experts, who realised that the focus on reducing litter in Portugal and Europe should not only be on cleaning but also on prevention. The existence of a European association of litter prevention organisations generated positive feedback from participants particularly on how critical it is to have a platform that enables members to share best practices to keep and maintain a clean environment. On a similar note, Maria Cabrera, representing Paisaje Limpio, presented the organisation and explained how citizen participation can lead to a cleaner urban environment.

During the conference, some organisations expressed the willingness to discuss with the Network the possibility of working together on future projects. Among them were the Foundation for the Circular Economy (Economia Circular) and its Director of Projects Luis Medina-Montoya, who presented the ANTICIPA programme, a tool for the evaluation and improvement of waste policies in the context of the circular economy (see here).

The 7th National Urban Cleanliness Conference is scheduled to take place in Porto (Portugal) from 7 to 9 July 2025.

We would like to sincerely thank Limpeza Urbana for giving us the opportunity to present the Network to such a broad audience. It is essential that all stakeholders share responsibility to effectively prevent litter and maintain clean neighborhoods!
