Hungary postpones the ban on single use cups
11 July 2024
In 2021, the Hungarian Government adopted the Government Decree 301/2021 (VI. 1.) to transpose the EU's Single Use Products Directive (SUPD) at national level. Besides the ban on single use plastic products covered by the SUPD, the decree also included an additional ban on single use beverage cups and their caps and lids as of 1 January 2023, covering cups made partly or wholly of plastic, including paper cups coated with plastic and cups made partly or wholly of biodegradable or compostable plastic.
At the end of 2022 the ban was postponed to 1 July 2024.
It is now confirmed that the Hungarian government decided to postpone the ban for two more years until 30 June 2026.
